At the train station, Michał meets an eccentric girl called "Italian". He is an anthropologist at the outset of his career as a scientist, and she has just become a student. Soon, a torrid love affair is born. As their relationship grows deeper, Michał is making progress in the study of recently discovered remains of an ancient shaman. In his film, Żuławski combines sexual ecstasy with death, painting one of the most insightful portraits of Poland in the era of the transformation.
